The Obama challenge

Years ago we were excited about our first Black President because he was black…but more importantly we knew he was the right man at the right time.

He (along with a bunch of celebrities) thanked the American people for the overwhelming support. But then he also told us that it’s easy to support him then…and then he asked for our support when things got hard, didn’t look good, or when he had to make an unpopular decision.

He was probably talking about now.

The Debt Ceiling Fallacy

Money does not exist. The only currency that exists is credit and government promissory notes. That said, for decades the government of the United States has been increasing our debt ceiling (or our ability to make promises) every year for decades.

Most reasonable people perceive the connection between our first Black President and the Right Wings’ attack on his ability (and right) to govern by not raising the debt ceiling. This lack of progressive thought is the reason why America will cease to be the Economic World Leader.

While racism has never made sense, it has always been the cause of failure for major empires. From the Babylonians, Romans, Spanish, German, and now American. What these right wing/conservatives don’t have the vision to see is that once America’s financial reign is over, there will not be an Aryan savior waiting to rescue her from the liberal nigger. No, the next financial power will be BRIC (Brazil, India and China).

All this said, the world is changing and the power structure that defines currency is changing as well. Our ability to adapt will be based on our ability to see past the smoke screens.

Peace

My Generation

They say you can define a generation by the art that’s produced during their tenure. From the revolutionaries of the 60’s civil rights era to the hippies of the 70’s sexual revolution, the correspondence between music’s social commentary and society’s attitude are consistent.

Hip hop in the 80’s spoke directly to the counter-culture enclave of communities adversely affected by the crack pandemic. The 90’s braggadocio and shiny suit sauntering spoke to the budget surplus and changing economic climate that many attribute to President Clinton.

But what does our current music reflect or say about society?

My lesson from Otis

Redding died at 26…before he had a chance to finish recording “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” his first and only number 1 record. Legend has it, he whistled the melody of the second verse in anticipation of coming up with lyrics. Not that I’m glad he died, but isn’t the whistle part of what makes the song so great?

The moral of the story is that less is sometimes so much more. Trust your instincts.

Blacks' economic gains wiped out in downturn → msnbc.msn.com

Millions of Americans endured similar financial calamities in the recession. But for Goldring and many others in the black community, where unemployment is still rising, job loss has knocked them out of the middle class and back into poverty. Some even see a historic reversal of hard-won economic gains that took black people decades to achieve.
